Leak Detectors

Water leak detection

A business that finds hidden water leaks may price by the hour, by the visit or by the result. Asking each one the same questions shows what you are paying for.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01How do you find the leak?Listening equipment, thermal cameras, tracer gas or moisture meters. Ask which they would use here.
02What will the visit cost, and what does it cover?Ask whether the price stands if they cannot find the leak.
03Will you need to open walls or floors to find it?And who makes good any opening afterwards.
04Do you repair the leak once you find it, or only locate it?If only locate, ask who they would pass the repair to.
05Will I get a written report with photos?Ask whether it is in the price. It helps if an insurer or another trade needs it.
06Do you work on hot water, cold water, waste pipes or pools?Say which you suspect, so they can tell you if it is outside their work.
07How soon can someone come?Write down the time they give.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From leakdetectors.com.au, a concept page.

What to tell them first

Say what you have noticed: a water bill that jumped, a damp patch, a meter that turns with every tap off, or a sound in the wall. The more each business knows, the closer their price will be.

If you can, read the water meter, leave all taps off for a while, and read it again. Telling them whether it moved is a useful start.

Finding it and fixing it

Finding a leak and repairing it can be two different jobs, sometimes for two different businesses. The sheet asks about both so you know who does what before anyone arrives.

Keep any report you are given. It records where the leak was and what was done.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
